Picos de Europa, Spain
Génesis, our first forest. Crowdfunded in 2017
Our first forest was born in 2017 thanks to the contribution of 865 reforesters from all over the world, who backed our Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in February 2017. Génesis has been officially certified as a carbon capture project by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food - Ministry for the Ecological Transition (Mapama) through its bureau of climate change. By investing in this project today you are supporting our whole community and pushing us one step further to grow its surface area.
Centuries of deforestation and the cumulative effect of global warming means Spain could suffer severe desertification if we don’t act quickly. Spain’s 15 national parks cover 343,647 hectares (849170 acres), which barely represents 1.4% of the country’s total surface area. Reforestum is utilizing Collaborative Reforestation in an effort to increase the protected forest areas and mitigate the effects of climate change by sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere, establishing the ground and storing water. This is why Génesis is located next to the National Park Picos de Europa (67,127 hectares) and to the Natural Park Parque Natural de Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre (78,300 hectares).
Picos de Europa is one of those rare places in Europe today that combines magnificent scenery, a thriving rural economy and an enormous range of flora and fauna, the traditional methods of livestock farming practiced here allowing wildlife to flourish alongside mankind. The 671 km2 “Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa” covers all three massifs. At the park's higher elevations, open meadows filled with grazing cattle are backed by a wild landscape of sparkling lakes and imposing limestone peaks; down below, sheer rock faces plunge into a series of stunning river gorges.
