A partnership between Reforestum and Ecosphere+has won the World Economic Forum’s UpLink Trillion Trees Challenge.

The Trillion Trees Challenge was launched earlier this year as part of the movement to restore and grow 1 trillion trees globally by 2030. The project enjoys the support of the World Economic Forum’s 1t.org and is hosted by UpLink, a leading digital platform that spotlights creative solutions to the most pressing global issues. The movement seeks to unlock innovative solutions to accelerate and scale forest conservation and restoration.

This year’s Trillion Trees challenge, the first-ever, saw Reforestum and Ecosphere+ selected as winners in a field of 250 entries from across the globe. Start-ups vied for the accolade with innovative ideas to green our cities, unlock the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) tech for trees, build a forest economy, and scale and accelerate forest conservation and restoration.

Lisa Walker, CEO of Ecosphere+ is“proud to have been selected as winners of the Trillion Trees Challenge with Reforestum, and to have competed alongside such innovative and inspirational solutions.”Praising the“whole host of unique ideas” showcased by the competition, she emphasized not only the importance of their wide-ranging scope but also of the power of partnership“to enable more corporates and customers to join this movement and to help scale climate action for nature at the pace required.”

Over the coming 5 years, the Reforestum and Ecosphere+ partnership aims to protect and plant over 5 billion trees and over 5 million hectares globally, much of that in sensitive habitats of high conservation value. Ecosphere+ has already helped avoid the release of 30 million tonnes of carbon emissions since their inception.

Reforestum CEO Diego Sanz Prieto has ambitious plans for the next five years. He aims to "build truly momentous climate action" by bringing carbon pricing at the point of sale to over a billion customers through corporate partnerships.

To this end, Reforestum and Ecosphere+ are embedding natural climate solutions into transactions up and down the value chain and across many different sectors. Enabling businesses to achieve stretchy sustainability targets by offsetting their carbon footprint through reforestation. Reforestum provides digital technologies and local reforestation capabilities, while Ecosphere+ brings large-scale, tropical forest conservation and restoration projects, as well as corporate solutions. Together the partnership is breaking down barriers to scaling climate finance for nature by offering an end-to-end solution that uses technology to bring transparency to scalable climate action.

Reforestum and Ecosphere+ have reason to be optimistic. Adding just one cent to every financial transaction worldwide in a year could keep 370 billion trees standing. But for now, the two companies are proud winners of the World Economic Forum’s UpLink Trillion Trees Challenge
